      Atama Paparangi

Inspired by the work of C.F.Goldie
Atama Paparangi
Rarawa Tribe

Atama Paparangi was a Rarawa chief who lived in the Hokianga. He fought against Russell, Bay of Islands (Then known as Hone Heke in Kororareka) in the 1830s and was a favourite subject of Goldie. The two became firm friends during the 1901 royal visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and during the oil on canvas paintings he sat for.  This Atama piece was inspired by one of many Goldie paintings of him, called "In Doubt" (1938)
